Annotation This is the story of Daniel Fisher, also known as William or Billy Winters. He was born into slavery on the Cox plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia, about 1808. The great-grandfather of Billy's master had himself journeyed from England in servitude to become a slave master - setting the stage for Billy's own journey from slavery to freedom. The highlights of Daniel's escape from slavery and his travels on the Underground Railroad are well known in the small town of Deep River, Connecticut.
